As seniors get older it’s normal for them to experience some age-related vision loss. But many vision problems can be avoided with good lifestyle choices. Seniors who do develop vision problems may be able to stop those in their tracks with early diagnosis and healthy lifestyle choices which their in-home care providers can assist them with.
Because vision is so important for seniors who want to age at home seniors and their in-home care providers should use these tips to help maintain and protect their sight as they get older:
Wear Sunglasses
The sun’s rays are very damaging and over time can impact eye health and vision. Seniors should be wearing sunglasses when they go outside even in the winter or on cloudy days. When the sun’s rays reflect off of snow they can be very bad for the eyes which is why seniors should be wearing sunglasses in the winter too. Sunglasses will also help seniors protect their eyes from wind, dust, pollen, and other irritants that could potentially cause damage to their eyes.
Get More Sleep and Eat More Veggies
Sleep gives the brain time to process information and it gives the eyes some much-needed rest. Seniors that aren’t getting enough sleep aren’t just short-changing their brains, they are also risking their vision. Dry eye and other conditions that can impact a senior’s vision and eye health can be impacted by how much sleep that senior gets. Seniors should be aiming to get 9-11 hours of sleep at night. If that’s not possible seniors should be getting eight hours of sleep at a minimum. If your senior parent is having trouble sleeping in-home care might help.
Seniors should be eating more vegetables. Vegetables are packed with vitamins and minerals that seniors need to keep their eye health like Vitamin K. Vegetables like carrots, especially purple carrots, sweet potatoes, and green leafy vegetables have large amounts of antioxidants as well as vitamins and minerals that can help keep eyes healthy. If your senior loved one doesn’t cook much or doesn’t eat enough vegetables in-home care for seniors can help. An in-home care provider can encourage your senior loved one to eat more vegetables and help them prepare tasty meals that include vegetables.
Get Moving
Exercise has many benefits, and better vision is one of them. When seniors move more and get their blood circulating that oxygen-rich blood will improve eye health and that will help seniors maintain their vision for longer. Exercising for at least 30 minutes most days of the week can have a huge impact on a senior’s health. And seniors who are exercising regularly will also find it helps them sleep better, which will help their vision.
Get In-Home Care to Get you to an Eye Exam
Seniors should be getting an eye exam at least once a year. Catching any eye problems early will give seniors the best chance to fix the problem before it impacts their vision. If it’s been a while since your senior parent had an eye exam call and schedule an eye exam for them today.
