When he gets dressed, is he re-wearing the same clothing because he can’t do laundry anymore? Does he choose appropriate outfits given the weather forecast?

Is His Home Cluttered?

Is your dad able to keep his home relatively clean and free of clutter? If he walks into his kitchen, are the counters covered? Would he be able to put down a hot pan from the oven onto a surface or would he be stuck balancing a pan while making space?

Does your dad’s front entry have shoes all over, or does he have a place for them? If he has to go up a flight of stairs to get to his bedroom or main living area, would he trip on things, or are the stairs clear of obstacles?

How Often Do People Visit Him?

Is your dad at risk of isolation and loneliness? Do family members and friends stop by throughout the week to see how he’s doing, or does he have to wait weeks before anyone checks on him?

If he has to run errands like purchasing groceries or picking up his prescriptions, can he still safely drive? Is he at the mercy of timing those trips with the times people stop by?

Does He Pay Bills on Time?

When the bills are due, is your dad able to make the payments on time? Does he know how to pay his bills online or does he still mail in payments? With USPS slow-downs, mailing bills may lead to late payment fees if he’s not accounting for delays.

What Does He Eat Each Day?

How is your dad’s diet? Is he relying heavily on foods he can quickly microwave or does he eat homemade meals each day? Does he know to read nutrition labels to check for saturated fat, sodium, and sugar content?

When Were His last Dentist, Doctor, and Optometrist Appointments?

Your dad should be seeing his doctor and eye doctor each year. His dental cleanings and exams should happen twice a year. Is he making and keeping those appointments or has he skipped some? Would it help him if someone else was helping him stay organized?
